Optimization of in-line metrology for electrode coating production lines

Uniformity of the active electrode materials in cell construction is essential to achieve the safety and reliability of the battery in its intended application. Validation of the electrode loading and final dimensions of individual layers by post-production destructive means only sample a small portion of the total electrode sheet. Alternatively, in-line metrology is an essential tool for monitoring and controlling the electrode uniformity throughout the entire sheet. Alignment between the destructive, post-production samples and the in-line metrology is therefore critical.

Regular measurement of capability samples on In-line measurement gauges can be utilized to ensure production quality over long time. By using long-term stable referenced surrogate sample sets and traceability within the line and across multiple production lines can be maintained.
