High-throughput in battery material research – a case study for cathode active materials

Material development on pilot or production scale is restricted by material availability, space and device capacity and cost. A common strategy to increase sample numbers and to enable parameter screening is a combination of miniaturization, parallelization, automation and digitalization. We will present a cathode materials R&D workflow that increases the number of parameters and materials that can be screened under the condition of using scalable unit operations. Increasing the throughput for an isolated unit operation will lead to bottlenecks in prior or following operations. We have therefore developed and applied solutions specifically for high-throughput research on cathode active materials, comprising the whole material preparation and testing workflow on a laboratory scale.
