Fraunhofer Battery Alliance

Welcome to the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance
High-performance batteries are key components in mobile and stationary electrically powered applications and are also the most complex elements in these systems. Particularly in high energy and output ranges, the durability and reliability of a system must be high, placing significant technical demands on the batteries.
Through research in the field of electrochemical energy storage, the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance develops suitable technologies and conceptual solutions to application level, paying particular attention to their social, economic, and ecological impacts. Optimization is needed across a series of disciplines. The competences of the 24 members of the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance cover materials, cells and cell production, systems and integration, recycling, simulation, digitalization and testing. The Fraunhofer Battery Alliance develops, optimizes, and characterizes customer-specific materials and manufacturing processes for batteries and develops complete battery systems for a range of applications. Therefore, the institutes operate special pilot plants for transferring results obtained in the laboratory up to industrial scale. Research and development work aims to increase the tolerance to external influences and improves the storage properties and intrinsic safety, paying attention to aspects of the cell manufacture. Emphasis is placed on lithium-ion systems, next-generation batteries, redox-flow batteries and high-temperature storage devices.
In recent years, two spin-offs have been formed from member institutes of the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance. Our Fraunhofer spin-offs develop new solutions from application to market maturity based on technologies and know-how from research.
The Batalyse GmbH developed a software system to automate time consuming manual data processing like file gathering, categorization and evaluation for R&D, production and QM with focus on electrochemistry. Sort and filter your test, analysis and production data for specific materials, projects, customers and performance. Link material properties, with production parameters and product performance, receive structured data and apply your AI to optimize your processes and products. Batalyse is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer ICT and the software is used by many institutes of the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance.
In 2019, volytica diagnostics GmbH, another successful spin-off of the Fraunhofer IVI, was founded, focusing on reliable condition monitoring of batteries based on field data. volytica diagnostics focuses on safe and easy-to-integrate battery diagnostics solutions based on decades of research.
Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS; IEK-12) of Forschungszentrum Jülich

Welcome to Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS; IEK-12) of Forschungszentrum Jülich!
As the lifeblood of every battery cell, the electrolyte ensures that all components work effectively together. By electrolyte research, Helmholtz Institute Münster makes a significant contribution to the success of mobility and energy transition. When researching and developing innovative battery cell technologies, scientists at HI MS also ask the key question: How can we ensure the cost-effective and long-term storage of large quantities of generated electricity using a small amount of space?
The priority areas of research are the five classes of electrolytes: solid anionic electrolytes, solid cationic electrolytes, polymer electrolytes, liquid electrolytes, and hybrid electrolytes. HI MS’ existing expertise and infrastructure covers a broad spectrum of the theory, chemistry, and technology behind electrolytes, battery cells, and battery systems.

Meet Batterieforschungszentrum / Universität Münster

MEET (Münster Electrochemical Energy Technology) Battery Research Center at the University of Münster is one of the foremost battery research centers in Germany and one of the leading drivers of top-level research internationally. With the aim of helping the urgently needed turnaround in the energy and transport sectors to succeed, the research at MEET covers the optimization of the market-dominating lithium-ion technology, the further development of other materials, and promising new approaches such as solid-state batteries. Specified on new and advanced materials, cell production and the recycling of battery cells, MEET scientists research into higher energy densities, longer lifecycles, maximum safety, improved sustainability and the lowest possible costs for energy storage systems.
Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA)

The Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) was founded in 1965 and has been managed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. ir. Dr. h.c. Rik W. De Doncker since 1996. Today, ISEA is home to the chairs of Power Electronics and Electrical Drives by Prof. De Doncker, of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems by Prof. Dirk Uwe Sauer and of Aging Processes and Lifetime Prediction of Batteries by Prof. Egbert Figgemeier.
The Chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems Technology is organised into three departments that deal with energy storage systems and their system integration. Our goal is to optimise existing battery technologies for applications. Technology selection, optimal dimensioning, lifetime-maximising operation, management strategies, reliable, safe system design and accurate monitoring and diagnosis for mobile and grid applications play an important role. To achieve this, detailed electro-thermal models and aging simulations of all relevant energy storage technologies are continuously developed and parameterized with extensive laboratory analytics.
C3 Prozess- und Analysentechnik GmbH

C3 Prozess- und Analysentechnik GmbH offers measurement and laboratory technology around the battery application area. Gamry Instruments’ systems (electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry) are used to characterize batteries and components in R&D and QC. Software packages such as EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) are used here. Measuring cells and other accessories complete the Echemistry program. THINKY’s highly efficient centrifugal mixers enable bubble-free production of e.g. electrode pastes. The thermal conductivity measurement systems from Hot Disk AB can be used to characterize both pure materials and composite materials with regard to their thermophysical properties for thermal management.
