Determination of Parasitic Reactions and Lithium Plating in Real Time
Parasitic reactions are a severe thread to batteries that determine their life time and performance, thus, a reliable judgement of parasitic reactions is crucial for an efficient and sustainable development of new batteries. Even better if it is quick and easy to access !
TA Instruments | Waters and Biologics provide now a system that leverages such information in real time and online to plot. Basically it is a combination of very known and reliable systems in calorimetry and electrochemistry, the Thermal Activity Monitor (TAM IV) from TA Instruments | Waters and the VSP-300 Potentiostat Battery Cycler from Biologics.
As a result you will save money and time for battery development while improving battery performance and lifetime.

Due to its excellent sensitivity TAM IV is able to detect the heat flow of self discharge, i.e. the dissipated energy resulting from parasitic reactions. However, its strength it achieves in combination with the Battery Cycler, because calorimetry is the only method to evaluate such reactions under load or during Charge / Discharge cycles.
Beside the current heat flow TAM Assistant software will enable in-operando recording of such parameters as parasitic power, entropic power, enthalpy potential, state of charge as well as various ratios like dQ/dV or dV/dCharge. You can easily plot those parameters for several charge and discharge cycles together for an easy comparison or proof of a trend between cycles.
Thus, you can investigate easily the impact of different electrolytes, additives or electrode materials on the battery performance.
